How is an organic mattress different than a traditional mattress?

Today more than ever before, people are trying to implement a clean, natural lifestyle in all the areas of their lives. From the food that you eat to the items you purchase for in and around your home, you want it all to be as close to natural as possible.

Well, it is quite simple: organic fruits are healthier because they do not have pesticide and fertilizer residues. Similarly, organic milk is healthier because it comes from cows that are not given any antibiotics or artificial hormones and they eat simple grass instead of artificial fodder.

Likewise, organic mattresses do not contain the chemicals that traditional mattresses have. Organic mattresses are made with organic and non-toxic materials instead of conventional and chemically questionable materials. Consumers are choosing organic mattresses to avoid unnecessary exposure to these chemicals. If you are shopping for a new mattress, it’s worth knowing what you’ll be spending a third of your life on.

It’s Not Just Black or White

On the market today there are several brands that use an increased proportion of natural materials, and misnomer names like latex, plant infused gel with poly foams, and other natural fabrics that are not at all organic or natural. Don’t be tricked with the marketing gimmicks and promotions.

Are mattresses labelled “eco” or “green” just as good?

No. “Eco” and “green” are not regulated terms and can be misleading. Many of these “eco” materials may sound good, but they are often not even “natural”, and are certainly not focused on eliminating harmful chemicals.

GOLS organic certified latex

The best mattresses in the world are made with organic, 100% natural latex rubber. No other material comes close in terms of comfort, breathability, resiliency, elasticity, motion isolation, durability, support, and even biodegradability. It makes a superior comfort and support layer. And the most desirable and scarce latex is GOLS organic certified latex — grown ethically, sustainably, and responsibly — without persistent pesticides and herbicides and processed in organic-certified facilities to stringent standards. Although organic latex may look the same as natural, blended, or synthetic latex, it’s not. Organic latex is safe for farmers and their families, better for you, and better for the planet.

non-toxic

Oeko-tex certification

The OEKO-TEX certification is issued to brands after the mattresses are tested for 100 chemicals that can prove to be harmful. OEKO-TEX consists of 18 independent research and test institutes which detect the existence of harmful chemicals like lead, arsenic, etc. along with pesticides, dyes, phthalates, etc. Annual testing is required to keep the certification active.

Eco-institute certification

The Eco-INSTITUTE certification is provided by The Eco Institute, a testing laboratory based in Cologne, Germany. The institute tests mattresses for pollutants, odors, toxins, and emissions, inspecting the quality of the
content. Each compound present in the product is tested individually to ascertain its genuineness and safety. The certification is issued once the product clears all required tests.
